College students are always looking for the ultimate slim down challenge. The usual thirty-minute bike ride, yoga class and treadmill run is getting old and its time to spice up your summer with an ultimate physical experience: The 2012 Spartan Race.

This is an extremely challenging sprint distance race but the running is the easy part. Each course includes multiple extreme obstacle courses including challenges such as rope climbing, mud and fire pits, barbed wire barriers and more.

There are two Spartan Race obstacles coming to our tri-state area this summer. On June 2 and 3 the Spartan Sprint (four miles & 10 obstacles) will take place in Tuxedo Park, New York. On September 8 and 9 the Super Spartan (eight miles & 20 obstacles) will take place in Vernon, New Jersey. As if crossing the finish line in one piece isn’t enough there is an opportunity to make your race give back to cancer research.

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Team In Training has trained over half a million athletes and has raised over one billion dollars for cancer research since it began a lifelong journey in 1988.

Team in Training will provide eight weeks of training for the June 2 event. Participants are encouraged to go on Saturday morning runs with the team as well as participate in obstacle events like rock climbing.

SFC Junior Claudia Oddo said, “LLS is an amazing organization and having Team In Training partner with the Spartan Race is a great way to not only have fun and get in shape, but help find a cure for blood cancer and truly make a difference.”

Team in Training has teams in every borough and each team meets at a common location weekly. The fundraising minimum for this event is $750. Your fundraising includes race entry, eight weeks of coached workouts, transportation to and from the race, training and race-day apparel, pre-race inspiration dinner, and post-race victory party and best of all, bragging rights.

The Spartan Race will test your strength, stamina and endurance while saving the lives of others. If you chose to participate in the event regularly you can receive a ten dollar student discount off the entry fee.

The entry fee ranges from $60-$130 depending on how fast you sign up. The best part is you can create a team, so gather your college crew and get ready for the race of a lifetime.
