The St. Francis women’s basketball team (13-10, 7-4 NEC) took a devastating loss by the hands of Wagner College (8-14, 6-5 NEC) earlier today with the final score of 87-85.
St. Francis had control of majority of the game until the Wagner Seahawks were able to outscore the Terriers, 27-16, since the start of the fourth quarter.
Wagner’s leading scorer, Taylah Simmons (30 points), hit a jump shot with only 7 seconds to go in the game which gave her team the lead. Senior guard Nakylia Carter was later fouled after and only made one free throw to give the Seahawks a 2-point lead over the Terriers.
With the opportunity to either tie or win the game, the Terriers had immediately turned the ball over during the inbound pass which allowed Wagner to win the game.
Tonight’s game was the third straight for SFC in which senior guard Amy O’Neill finished with 10+ assists as she finished with 13 assists.
Junior Jade Johnson was the leading scorer for the Terriers as she finished with 30 points, 4 assists, and 2 rebounds. Behind Jade was Sophomore Ally Lassen finishing with 18 points (career-high), 7 rebounds and 3 blocks. Senior Maria Palarino ended with 16 points and 7 rebounds.
This loss for the Terriers will bring them down to 4thplace in the Northeast Conference, just one place ahead of tonight’s opponent. The Terriers will look to gain a lot of momentum to end the season as they will play our NEC and borough rivals, LIU Brooklyn, this Saturday at 1:00 pm.
