Recent St Francis College graduate and former SFC Today Deputy Editor-in-Chief Anthony Ruggiero obtained a position with Major League Baseball — and his work is now featured in the World Series Program.

Ruggiero’s World Series Program feature highlights the 10 Most Dominant Players in Major League Baseball.

Although it took a lot of time and effort, Ruggiero is pleased with the outcome. “It took a lot of work to compile and narrow the list down to just ten. But in the end, the story came out fantastic, art and content wise,” he said.

When his boss approached him about writing a feature in the World Series Program, Ruggiero took the assignment without hesitation.

Ruggiero was able to cover games at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, and Citi Field in Queens to obtain quotes for his six-page feature. With his ultimate goal of being a beat reporter, sitting in the press box at Yankee Stadium was a dream come true for him.

“If you told me almost three months nearly to the date of my graduation that I would be in the press box at Yankee Stadium, I would have said you were crazy.”

Ruggiero applied for the Editorial Intern position in December of 2012, just shy of six months before his college graduation.

He had expected to finish the internship over the course of his final semester at SFBK, but he didn’t hear back from Major League Baseball until April.

Ruggiero decided to take the MLB’s offer and began interning two weeks before his graduation. “It was a blessing in disguise,” he said.

Ruggiero’s internship didn’t start out the stereotypical way that most do. He was thrown right into the fire; he was assisting editors with editing and fact-checking stories. After showing his potential, he started writing and proofreading.

This past summer, Ruggiero attended the Home Run Derby and the All-Star Game. “[These] were two things on my baseball bucket list I was able to cross off.”

As a die-hard baseball fan, Ruggiero described that week as “incredible.”

While he was at SFBK, Ruggiero interned for the Brooklyn Nets and the Staten Island Yankees.
