While home, he encounters a young women Savannah, who is on spring break from college. The two are only together for two weeks but that is all it takes to fall in love.
Before Savannah goes back to school she and John promise to write each other while he is away.
John is originally supposed to return home for good in 12 months, but a tragedy occurs, and John decides to re-enlist in the army.
The story deals with how Savannah and John handle their time apart. The re-enlistment is for another two years, so there is a lot that happens in both of their lives during that time.
There are certainly some unexpected turns and surprises in the story. It wrenches at the heart and has its warm moments, but is not a must-see.
If you read the book, the movie is very different. The movie is short; so many details are cut out and simplified. There is also a different ending from the novel. To those who know the story they will be very surprised at the new ending.
The movie deals with some serious and sensitive topics, but seems to fall short in credibility. If you are a fan of romantic movies then this might be a movie you want to see, but otherwise you can miss it.
To all you girls out there please do not drag any boys you know to see this movie simply because they will be bored. If you want to see something cute and romantic see it with a group of girls. Otherwise, this is one movie you can pass on.
