Last Friday was the release of director Miguel Sapochnik’s sci-fi action film, Repo Men. The film stars a strong cast of actors including: Jude Law, Forest Whitaker, and Liev Schrieber.
Repo Men takes place in the future where the medical industry has advanced rapidly. Artificial organs are available on the market for people to buy; if they want to live a longer and healthier life.
The government (also known as The Union), is the party that distributes these organs to people who are willing to pay an expensive, monthly fee in order to keep their organs. If, for any reason, the client misses their payments, the Repo Men (Law and Whitaker), come in and repossess the organs, or more like the government's 'property' - basically killing the clients in the process.
Repo Men takes a strong stand against how the government and the medical system are unfair and corrupt to its loyal citizens.
Right from the beginning of the film, you may already have made up your mind thinking that the Repo Men, consisting of Remy (Jude Law), Jake (Forest Whitaker), and The Unit chief (Liev Schreiber), are the antagonists.
However, when the protagonist and narrator of the film, Remy, suffers a heart attack in a freak accident, all of that changes; and the hunter soon becomes the hunted.
When Remy has a warrant out for his heart to be repossessed, there is a true test of friendship and loyalty, where Jake has to decide whether or not to help his friend, or follow the orders pertaining to his job.
While the film does have its low points - sometimes you felt yourself losing interest quickly with the characters getting into the technical and scientific aspects of what goes on in The Union - Sapochnik does an exceptional job of commenting on the government and the health care system in general.
If you are the type of person who cannot stand the sight of blood and human entrails, then you may not be able to stomach watching Repo Men.
However, if you do enjoy the sight of blood and guts from a fast-paced action thriller, then you may want to check this film out.
