Basketball: The Terriers look to get back on the right track with a win tonight on the road against the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils.
Preview: After a tough loss in their last outting against Mount St. Mary’s, the Terriers will look to right the ship this evening with a win over fellow NEC counterparts the Central Connecticut Blue Devils. Which can be seen live at 7pm on Necfrontrow.com http://www.necfrontrow.com/webcast.php/CCSU-1407/
The Terriers fell 88-82 last Saturday to the Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers, which marked their first conference loss of the season dropping them to 1-1 in conference play and 10-7 overall. Despite the efforts of Junior forward Jalen Cannon who scored a career high 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, the Terriers were unable to come out victorious.
Tonight we can expect the Terriers to come out with a full head of steam as they will be eager to put their last performance in the past. Jalen Cannon looks to stay hot tonight as he is coming off of several great performances.
Over the last six games he is averaging 18.8 points per game and 9.6 rebounds. He has proved to be the Terriers best player all season long, but other guys must step up because it can not be a one man show every night.
The Terriers have gotten some real quality play out of Junior guard Brent Jones who has stepped up to be the teams floor general. Jones has had a nice couple of game where we have seen him play an aggressive style of basketball. He is creating opportunities for his teammates to score and he is doing all the little things that a point guard needs to do while leading the team.
Senior guard Ben Mockford will look to have a big game tonight, he is coming off a tough game where he only scored 6 points shooting 2-7 from the field. Expect him to look for his shot early and often, if he is able to get hot that changes the whole dynamic of the Terriers offense. His ability to shoot the three ball, will open up the interior game where Cannon can excel.
The Central Connecticut State Blue Devils come into tonight’s matchup sitting in last place in the NEC with a 4-11 record and 0-2 conference record. They are currently on a three game losing streak, two of their loses coming at the hands of fellow NEC opponets, The Wagner Seahawks and St. Francis U Red Flash.
Some players to watch out for on the Blue Devils end are Junior guard Kyle Vinales and Junior forward Faronte Drakeford. Vinales is the teams leading scorer averaging 17.4 points per game on the season, but has missed the last two games and will be inactive tonight. As for Drakeford he is scoring 12.7 points per game and pulling down 5.6 rebounds. If the Terriers can limit Drakeford, who has been very solid for the Blue Devils in the absence of Vinales they should be well on their way to victory.
Some keys to success this evening for the Terriers will be setting the tone of play. The Terriers must play their style of basketball and not look to get into a shootout with their opponent. We have seen them most successful when their defense translates into offense. Their defensive intensity has been the reason they have been so successful this season and they must continue that play tonight.
