The voices of Africa rang loud, and no drum missed a beat
No drum missed a beat, and neither did those individuals in the audience who grooved to the compa, moving their hips to the drums.

The African Cultural Club experieneced its first of many successful events to come.

A live band was accompanied by singing, dancing, spoken word, and acting - which not only provided entertainment, but a great learning experience about black history.

It all began with Josefina Sola, a St. Francis College student, singing the Black National Anthem. Her powerful voice reached each and every person in the room and the words definitely touched their hearts.

Mu Sigma Upsilon Incorporated then took charge of the stage stepping a strong performance, which allowed the crowd an inside view into stepping's history and significance.

After the dancing, Shimiere Douglass performed a great spoken word piece about the mental idea of slavery that still seems to conquer us all from time to time.

By the end of the evening most of the audience was found still laughing and dancing. It was a time of fun and reflection.

Yande Paye, founder of the African Cultural Club stated, “I wanted to teach people about African culture because if you aren’t aware of where you came from, you don’t know where you are heading.”

Not only did the club give away food, knowledge, and entertainment, but money towards Haiti relief efforts and Relay for Life. A new college club needs all of the money it can get, but the African Cultural Club seems to put an emphasis on giving to those in need. All funds raised from the event were contributed to both causes.

“This was an amazing event and it is great to see a new club bring such great energy to the college,” said Peter Gonzales, a St. Francis College student. After all, it is not very often that the first event is so successful.

The turnout was amazing, and many people continue to talk about it until this day. When asked about the future endeavors of the club its members expressed that this is only the first step, and that there is hope for growth and expansion.africa1
