A new Women’s Empowerment Group will be started next semester at St Francis College by Director of Student Health Services Natasha Edwards and Mental Health Counselor Candice Abellard.
The group will meet in the Health and Wellness Center on the second floor of SFC once a week on Wednesdays from 5-6pm.
Asked why they wanted to start the Women’s Empowerment Group, Edwards said:
“We saw so many young women coming in struggling with their self esteem, their self worth, and their body image and so we thought why don’t we collectively bring all of these women together?
“… the women were diverse different races, different ages, different body shapes, different backgrounds, different socioeconomic statuses, different neighborhoods, but all were sharing the same type of feelings.
“So we thought why not bring them in and together we can explore this, and we can also heal from this.”
Edwards said the Women’s Empowerment Group is “a community on campus of women, or anyone who identifies as a woman … to come in and essentially talk about what are issues that are presented for women on campus.”
She said topics up for discussion will include “… relationships, it could be how do we feel represented, it could be faculty diversity, do we need more women that are administrators, do we need more women professors, do we need to teach different things but its essentially what are the things that impact the women on this campus and then how do we have a collective voice to make a change.”
