SFC welcomed author and professor Paul Moses as he spoke about his book The Saint and the Sultan: The Crusades, Islam and Francis of Assisi’s Mission of Peace on October 2nd, as part of St. Clare and St. Francis week.

Moses is a professor of journalism at Brooklyn College and the author of The Saint and the Sultan: The Crusades, Islam and Francis of Assisi’s Mission of Peace.

Moses is well known for his career in journalism covering major news events, and in 2010 his book won the Catholic Press Association award for best history book of the year.

The Saint and the Sultan: The Crusades, Islam and Francis of Assisi’s Mission of Peace focuses on the encounter between St. Francis of Assisi and Sultan Malik al-Kamil of Egypt during the Crusades, and looks further into their individual roles.

St. Francis is well known for being a peacemaker, feeding the poor, clothing the naked, housing the homeless, and of course his love of animals – but Moses uncovers other traits about Francis that many do not know and informs readers through his book.

Moses’ Franciscan Lecture regarding The Saint and the Sultan: The Crusades, Islam and Francis of Assisi’s Mission of Peace, was a great way to honor and kick off our St. Clare and St. Francis Week here at SFC.
