Tuesday evening inside the Steinberg Wellness Center, the St. Francis Brooklyn Men’s Basketball Team (12-14, 6-8) defeated the LIU Sharks (12-15, 7-7-) in the 45th Annual Battle of Brooklyn by a score of 87-77.
With four games left, the Terriers are eighth in the NEC. They must maintain or improve their standing to move on to the NEC Tournament playoffs.
In the first half of the contest, the Terriers started 9-0. The Sharks would then go on a 19-8 run bringing the score to 17-19. The Sharks would later go on an 11-9 run and then on a 5-2 run to end the first half 38-41.
In the second half, the Terriers would go on to outscore the Sharks 49-36. Milija Cosic with a three-pointer followed by a good layup would give the Terriers their first lead of the second half at 13:22. Later in the contest, they would lose the lead however they would regain it. They would then go on an 18-6 run and then on a 7-3 run to take the contest 87-77.
Top performers from the Sharks were Jermaine Jackson Jr., Raiquan Clark, Julian Batts, Virshon Cotton, and Jashaun Agosto.
Sophomore guard Jermaine Jackson led his team with a high of 30 points in 38 minutes. He grabbed four rebounds, assisted in three baskets, recorded two steals, scored five of 11 attempted three-pointers, and land five of six shots at the free-throw line.
Redshirt guard/forward Raiquan Clark finished with 17 points in 37 minutes. He also finished with eight rebounds, two assists, three steals, one of five attempted three-pointers and four of six shots at the free-throw line.
Senior guards Julian Batts and Jashaun Agosto, and sophomore guard Virshon Cotton all finished with nine points. Batts tallied nine points, four rebounds, four assists, one steal, scored one of five attempted three-pointers, and landed four perfect shots at the free-throw line in 30 minutes.
Agosto recorded nine points, two rebounds, two assists, one steal, scored one of three attempted three-pointers, and landed two perfect shots at the free-throw line in 32 minutes of play. Cotton recorded finished with nine points, one rebound, one steal, and three perfect three-pointers in 17 minutes of play.
From the Terriers, top performers were Rob Higgins, Milija Cosic, Unique McLean, Chauncey Hawkins, Deniz Celen, and Larry Moreno.
Freshman guard Rob Higgins led with 19 points in 29 minutes. He grabbed five rebounds, assisted in three baskets, scored one of four attempted three-pointers, and landed a career-high of 10 of 11 shots at the free-throw line.
Senior forward Milija Cosic recorded a career-high of 18 points in 27 minutes. He grabbed six rebounds, recorded one block, scored three of six attempted three-pointers, and scored a lonesome free-throw. He was also given the 2020 Battle of Brooklyn MVP trophy.
Graduate guard Unique McLean finished with a double-double in 25 minutes. He recorded 14 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, one block, and landed two perfect shots at the free-throw line.
Junior guard Chauncey Hwakins tallied 13 points in 27 minutes. He recorded six rebounds, five assists, five steals, and landed three of six shots at the free-throw line.
Senior forward Deniz Celen finished with nine points in 26 minutes. He grabbed seven rebounds, assisted in three baskets, recorded one block and one steal, and scored one of three attempted three-pointers.
Sophomore guard Larry Moreno finished with eight points in 30 minutes. He grabbed two rebounds, assisted in one basket, recorded one block and one steal, and scored two of three shots at the free-throw line.
The Terriers will be back in action on Friday, February 21, as they host the Bryant Bulldogs at the Pope Physical Education Center, Brooklyn Heights, New York. Game tips off at 7:30 p.m.
