Different parts of the borough have different styles. If you go to Williamsburg you will surely find the eclectic types who claim to be individuals -- they stand out in a crowd and add their own personal touches to their clothing.
The urban look is found in Bed Stuy, Flatbush and parts of Red Hook. It usually consists of casual clothing ranging from jeans, jerseys, sneakers and baseball hats for guys, and jeans, a simple shirt, and sneakers for girls.
The atmosphere of Brooklyn just isn’t the same as Manhattan. In Brooklyn, you can sometimes actually determine where someone is from just by what they are wearing.
Brooklyn resident and Fashion Institute of Technology student Nicole Cianciaruso argues, “Brooklyn has style, but not as much as Manhattan. Manhattan has different styles and is more varied.”
Brooklyn has made some progressive steps in the fashion world. There are boutiques in Brooklyn that are helping people experience new styles.
Fashionistas can find some real creative fashion, but only if they know where to look.
According to brooklynheightsblog.com, there is a Shop Brooklyn “Boutique Night.” This is an event that features trunk shows and discount offerings throughout the borough in local boutiques.
Most of the boutiques are in Park Slope, Fort Greene, and around North/West Brooklyn areas. Ishopbrooklyn.com shows that the only South Brooklyn area that is involved is Bay Ridge.
Downtown Brooklyn is becoming much more fashionable. New stores and boutiques are opening up, giving these Brooklynites different looks to choose from.
Stores found in Park Slope or on Smith Street are rather pricey but include vintage clothing, contemporary items, and some fun accessories that are hard to pass up.
Other parts of Brooklyn though are rather tragic. Most of Northern Brooklyn looks the same. There is no originality and no personality found in the clothing.
Maybe it’s because there are no boutiques found in Downtown Brooklyn, or people in North Brooklyn tend to not be as well off as those who live in Brooklyn Heights.
Krizia Pugliese of Bensonhurst claims Brooklyn has no style at all. “Everyone dresses the same, and shops at the same places. No one is different whatsoever, nor do they try to be.”
When asked what the typical look was in her neighborhood she says it’s jeans, a sweater, and Uggs.
The entire purpose of fashion is to be original, but it seems that most people in North Brooklyn think it just means to follow the newest trend, or no trend at all.
They try so hard to fit in with everyone else that they lose their own identity, there’s no originality. But never fear, there are some people out there who make others take notice of their style, even though there may only be a few of these fashion mavens in North Brooklyn.
You don’t have to be wealthy to be fashionable. It just takes time to find your own unique look. People don’t need to look like everyone else in their neighborhood, they just need to be themselves.
