Editor in Chief Barbara Cheung and her second tiers spent four months working on the September issue of Vicieux. September is a significant month in the fashion world.
Asked how she learned to publish a magazine, Cheung said: “Professor Mark McSherry actually tracked me down because he wanted one of his SFC Today reporters to interview me about the Club and at the time I was running away because I had no idea on what direction the club should go in.
"After he finally caught me and I had my interview, he proposed that I start a fashion magazine. It came across my mind before but because I didn't know where or even how to start -- I was a little bit timid about the idea.
"Professor McSherry invited me to sit in one of his news writing classes and briefly gave me a lecture on InDesign. The ten minute tutorial that he gave me has been the most useful lecture I have ever received and it has thus carried me and the fashion club into its now second issue since the first launch in May.”
Asked how the first and second issue differed, Cheung said: “I actually had an editing TEAM and it helped BIG TIME. My three Editors spent the entire summer with me at SFC and I am eternally grateful for their dedication. Production started four months prior to September in May and the editing window was a month instead of two weeks.”
Cheung appointed her second tier this summer -- Marissa Costello as Photo Shoot Manager, Olukemi “Kemi” Ojo as Editor of Story Content, and I am Editor of Photo Content.
Marissa Costello was recommended for the position of Photo Shoot Manager by fellow editor Olukemi Ojo.
Costello describes the job of the Photo Shoot Manager as so: “The photo shoot Manager is 2nd in command when it comes to the visual production of the magazine. They handle all administrative tasks: from scheduling photo shoots to actually directing them. It’s a really active job that requires a lot of responsibility and a lot of organization.”
When asked how she earned the Editor of Story Content position, Ojo said: “I started off writing articles and editing my own articles because I am an English Ed major. Barbara Cheung saw that I was fully capable of the task so she put me as editor of all story content.”
The Editor of Photo Content receives photos from members who are working on their own photos. It’s part of the magazine’s new modeling policy. If one wants to model, one must edit his/her own photos and send them to the Editor of Photo Content.
The editors are not just limited to editing. They have all written articles for the magazine and even modeled at one point or another.
Ojo stated: “I also model, write my own articles -- I am also a stylist and represent the magazine as a whole in communicating with the SGA (Sacor Rep).”
“The best part is being able to try different styles and experiment with makeup. Being able to exercise my writing and editing skills. The worst part is the work load; it can be quite stressful at times trying to meet deadlines and making sure the other writers make sure they meet the deadline that I give them.”
When discussing both the positive and negative aspects of working on the magazine Costello has said: “It’s different, I’ve never been really been interested in fashion, I always liked it but now I feel like I’m a part of something special, especially since it just started last year."
Cheung also has big plans for the club and magazine, she has said: “One of the goals is to host a public event that will center around building self esteem. This event will take place sometime in March hopefully. It’s in the works as of right now.
"I always think big and think of ways for the club to have a positive impact on the school. I have an affinity for doing things that have never been done before just so that I can check it off the bucket list.
"For the magazine, I’d just like for it to get better and better in design. You will definitely see a steady increase in quality as the magazine progresses in future issues.”
