A flash of fashion fever

So maybe the seasonable weather last week was just a fluke, but there is no denying that spring will be here before you know it. Isn’t it about time to begin thinking about spring fashion as well?

Fashion1It is definitely “in with the old, out with the new” for the upcoming spring season!

We’ll be seeing styles from every decade but our own this year, and even witness a more familiar change in fashion - ranging from the restrained, perfectly matched and put together styles of the early 2000s to the “anything goes” clause of recent years.

So tuck those dark, dismal sweaters up in the attic, because the next few months are all about bold colors and layered prints.

Undoubtedly, the styles of the 1970s have made yet another comeback. Yes, about five years have passed since most people threw away those abominable bellbottoms in exchange for skinny jeans; but, according to New York’s Spring Fashion Week back in September, they are certainly making a comeback.

They were seen all over the runway, showcased mostly with soaring waistlines. Don’t worry, though - skinny jeans aren’t going anywhere for a long time, so no need to throw them away! High waisted bellbottoms have exerted a valiant effort to become popular again commercially for a few years now, but it still has not caught on with the general public.

Only time will tell if this dated style will ever make a true comeback.

Fortunately, spring fashion has something for every mood or style. Even high fashion designers are churning out more everyday, wearable styles.

It is too often the everyday fashionista watches the runways only to be amazed by the incredible craftsmanship of architectural couture pieces, but knows too well that it is nothing she would ever have the nerve to wear in public. This spring promises to be fun, irreverent, and laid back with all the great designs coming your way.

Color-wise, there seems to be three major trends abound. The first (and most fun) being the entrance of bright, bold colors such as orange, green, and yellow. Nothing feels better after a New York winter of being clad in black, gray, and navy than the first warm day of spring when a person can pull out his or her brightest ensemble.

If that does not describe your feeling, there is an entire other side of the spectrum that is going to be popular this season: neutrals and whites. Pale shades of pink are quickly gaining momentum around all the stores. H&M, in particular, has become partial to these neutral patterns. Upon entering the store, the beige, pink, and browns dominate the racks with little variation, aside from the ever-present black (which will never go out of style, of course).Fashion2

Even though the little black dress will always be a fashion staple that every girl needs, there might be competition emerging in the form of LWD. That’s right, a Little White Dress. White minimalism is the last color to dominate spring fashion.

Okay, wearing all white could potentially be a disaster, since the color shows every mark of dirt - impossible to avoid here in New York City. Although, if one is wary of such potential fashion disasters, you can simply throw a handy Tide-to-go pen in her clutch or bucket bag. If you are careful, though, you could channel your inner old Hollywood star and turn heads with this elegant style.

As mentioned earlier, the ‘70s has arrived yet again. Most of us have not worn peasant blouses since we shopped at Limited Too, but more interesting versions of them will probably become trendy and chic.

Paired with high-waisted tapered jeans, this would look very cute and trendy, especially with platform wedges, espadrilles, or a cork heel, other popular styles out of the 1970’s.

Furthermore, the days of perfectly matched colors and prints are over. Floral and springtime go hand in hand, not surprisingly. Also popular are preppy bold stripes, bohemian prints, and funky geometric shapes.

Beware, however, as this does not mean you can put on a cheetah print blouse, electric blue leggings, and a gold lamè jacket and call it fashion forward. Try an intricate floral print dress with a neutral toned printed blazer.

Last summer, we witnessed the rising trend of loud printed shorts and skirts, but this spring we will also see more prints in longer, comfort driven pants.

With all of this to choose from, it is impossible to try out just one style. While fashion magazines and blogs are nice to tell you what is in and what is out, it really is up to you to wear whatever makes you feel comfortable and in vogue.

Originality is any girl’s best accessory, so do not be afraid to play around with numerous styles from different eras that may not have topped this year’s list.

Whatever you do wear this season, wear it with confidence, and you are guaranteed to stand out!
