By the middle of September I am always unwilling to give up the freedoms that summer affords me, but at the same time, I’m eager to fall into fall so that I can “play dress up” on a daily basis without feeling ridiculous.
The autumn season has always had a more sophisticated tone to it. Honestly, autumn makes summer look like the “dumb blonde”: carefree, great to look at and enjoy but no real depth.
During hot New York summer days regular folks have different versions of the same thing on: something sleeveless and/ or backless paired with the skimpiest shorts, finished with the highest heel or the lowest worn down rubber flip flop.
My point is that fall is pleasantly complex; it allows for more use of the imagination because there is almost always a need to wear layers, and when layering occurs a truly unique outfit is created.
I like to imagine that there’s a little party in my closet at the beginning of the fall season because all of the more interesting textures and fabrics are being re-introduced to each other: suede, velvet, tweed, the wool blends, perhaps silk and eventually leather.
The first official day of fall, September 22, brought us eighty- plus degree weather. I hope I’m not alone when I admit that I’m ready to whip out my trench coats and riding boots; I want to wear my cardigans and wedges, my hats, and my plum- colored eyeliner.
Fortunately enough, whenever the weather does choose to reflect the current time there is an unlimited world of fall fashion for every personality, and it’s ok to believe that you have multiple of those- it just means you’ll get to wear everything.
That clean-cut minimalism that I recall dominated the nineties when Calvin Klein made less absolute, is back, and preferably in black.
However, new neutrals like camel and frosty grey are being shown on runways in every silhouette, paying homage to all of the past decades.
Channel Chanel in fur (rather, with our student budgets, faux fur) of all colors, lengths, shapes and sizes.
And please, become that bold gaudy creature drenched in metallic and sparkle that is being held hostage inside of you; numerous retailers are reinterpreting and replicating the opulence executed in collections by John Galliano, Balmain and the late Alexander McQueen.
With forecasted rain showers for most of this week I’ll have to hold out just a bit longer before I let my fall feelings to take over. But when we do get our crisp autumn delight do keep in mind that your personal style should reign in all its glory over the trends, and not the other way around.
