Conan takes NYC

Conan O'Brien returned to New York for a week of filming on October 31, 2011. When he announced his return to NYC tickets were nearly impossible to get.
conan1Conan's New York fans have not seen him live since the Jay Leno/ Tonight Show debacle which took Conan's show to Los Angeles. Instead of fans purchasing tickets, they entered a ticket lottery and waited for an e-mail that would admit to one of the four tapings during the week.

Thousands of people entered for a chance to see Conan tape at the historic Beacon Theater and only 2,800 were chosen for each show. All together, 11,200 people were selected out of a pool of thousands of entrants.

I was fortunate enough to be one of the few selected to see Conan. I got the e-mail with the subject line "YOUR IN!" I immediately told my younger brother, Joseph and the countdown began to the date of the show.

I was selected for the Tuesday, November 1st show. After we picked up the tickets my brother and I walked around 74th street until 2pm when the line to the theater started to form.

After waiting outside for about an hour the Beacon Theater staff let the eager fans inside. Many compliments to the whole staff for dealing with a very large crowd.

The staff was very professional and they escorted fans into the building with ease. I also have to thank the ticket staff at Conan for a simple and easy pick up ticket process.

Upon entry to the Beacon Theater we saw the stage set up for the taping. There were two huge screens on each side of the stage so fans in the upper balcony could see the show.

Around 4:30 pm the lights went down and Conan's long time warm up act Jimmy Pardo came on stage to tell some jokes and hype up the crowd for Conan. Pardo is an extremely funny comedian and he picked on some audience members and got huge laughs from the crowd.

After telling the audience the legal notifications and telling us to shut off our cell phones it was time for Conan to start taping.

Andy Richter walked on stage to his podium to a huge standing ovation. Conan's long time side kick always makes the show a great time and has become a vital part of the show. Richter put his headphones on, got the signal from the producer and started announcing who was on the show. Then finally he announced "And here he is Conan O' Brien."

Conan walked on stage to a standing ovation. The cheering turned into a "Conan! Conan! Conan!" chant as he started to the infamous string dance for the audience.

After the crowd settled down Conan began his monologue making jokes about Herman Cain and the New York Knicks.

Conan said: "We're here in the historic Beacon Theater. The same guy who owns this also owns the New York Knicks. So he's used to bringing in skinny, tall guys who can't score."

2,800 New Yorkers simultaneously laughed at once.

After wrapping up the monologue a skit was shown as Conan took on the job of being a pedi-cab driver in New York City. The stage was then set for the interview of his main guest for the evening, X-Men star Hugh Jackman.

Hugh Jackman walked on stage wearing a Conan mask and mocked Conan's entrance routine.

An audience member was wearing the mask at the start of the show and Conan couldn't stop laughing.

The producer saw this and in between the set change asked the fan for the mask so that Hugh Jackman could wear it. The fan agreed without a problem and even got a hug from Conan at the end of the show.

Conan and Andy then showed the video package of Andy driving across the United States as he drove from California to New York for the shows this week.

After hugging some fans and pointing to fans in the balcony (I was one of them!) Conan introduced the musical guest for the evening, Cobra Starship featuring Sabi.

They closed out the taping with their hit single "You Make Me Feel" and got the Beacon Theater dancing along.conan2

Conan thanked the fans for coming and as the crowd chanted his name one more time. Conan took a final bow and exited stage left.

The whole show was amazing. It looks so smooth on television but when you're there in person you see what truly goes on. In between each segment a crew comes out and moves the set around, bringing out the new props for the next one.

Conan talks over things with the producer and then stage manager gives the crowd the signal and its back to the show. Watching at home you cannot tell how much commotion is going on during the commercials.

The stage crew had to bring out huge drum sets and instruments for Cobra Starship and did so in a matter of minutes.

What was truly remarkable was that Conan and his crew completed the taping with no bloopers. There were no cuts or re-takes.

Fans exiting the building were buzzing on how good the show was. Upon exiting the car that Andy drove cross country was parked outside and various fans stopped before they went home and took a picture with it.

My brother and I had a fantastic time. Conan is truly the king of late night television and he proves it on a daily basis.

Fans said the show in New York City has a certain vibe to it like it used to back when Conan was here in NYC full time. I speak for all of Team Coco as we wish he could be back in New York permanently.

It was a fun night for crowd and personally I would definitely go see Conan again.

You can watch Conan at 11pm, Monday through Thursday on TBS.
