The St. Francis College Men’s Soccer team had yet another strong showing in the 2017 season which concluded in November.
The team went 14-5-1 overall and 6-0-1 in conference play. The Terriers captured the title of Northeast Conference Champions for the fourth time in the last five years.
Head coach Tom Giovatto earned the title of NEC Coach of the Year for the second straight year in a row.
Giovatto holds a 106-66-30 overall record since his start in 2007 and has delivered four Northeast Conference Championships to the program.
When asked about the upcoming season Giovatto stated: “Our expectations at this point are very simple. To continue to improve.”
The team is graduating six seniors this year including NCAA Division I Men’s All-Northeast Honorees Dominick Falanga(first team), Roberto Bazzichetto(second team), and Collyns Laokandi(third team).
Although the Terriers are losing many key players this year they have a great deal of talent returning for the 2018 season.
Sophomore defender Faouzi Taieb was named to both the NCAA Division I Men’s All-Northeast Region First Team and the College Soccer News Third-Team All-American Squad.
Taieb was named the ECAC & NEC Defensive Player of the Year and anchored a Terrier defense that only allowed two goals in conference play this past season.
He’s also scored three goals, including a pair of game-winners this season versus Manhattan and Fairleigh Dickinson.
Another returning Terrier for the 2018 season is NCAA Division I Men’s All-Northeast Region Second Team honoree Ali Tounkara.
Tounkara was The MVP of the 2017 NEC Tournament after tying a tournament record with four goals and eight points. Tounkara was named to the 2017 NEC All-Rookie Team.
Two more returning Terriers were named to the NEC All-Rookie Team as well. Sophomore forward Matteo Caribotti and junior midfielder Sami Gliguem.
Giovatto stated: “The boys are working very hard this spring and I am very happy with their effort. We hope it continues through the rest of spring season.”
